Illuminating Looks

Most women desire a creamy, dreamy complexion. Even if you are not blessed with complexion perfection, make-up can help you improve on what nature has given you. Using a primer is the easiest way to create a "candlelit" glow to the face. Foundation should give a feeling of freshness and be anti-ageing. After applying moisturiser, simply apply a fine layer of a primer.
Follow with a hydrating foundation to quench skin dryness and bring radiance to tired skin. Don't be scared of the glimmer in highlighters, as this can help to illuminate the skin and reflect light off the face. It's best to put it where you would like to see light or sun reflected from.

Mannatech Inc and founder Sam Caster, have given us the Optimal Skin Care System TM containing only high quality, certified organic ingredients, rich in antioxidants and are free of fragrance, colourants, toxins and mineral oil. Used while taking Mannatech's glyconutrient multivitamins delivers maximum moisture and nutrients to facial skin cells, leaving you with glowing, more youthful-looking skin.

Saw Palmetto Berry

The His and Hers Herb.
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a vigorous palm that's native to the southeastern U.S. Colonial planters noticed that cows and pigs that reached beyond their corrals to eat the berries grew unusually healthy and fat. They resisted illness, had richer coats, and readily put on flesh. In time, doctors started to use it to increase the strength and weight of patients who needed to put on pounds after an illness.
Doctors now use saw palmetto to normalize sex hormones; it increases sex drive in women and revitalizes their reproductive organs. The herb has been called "old man's friend" because it slims down an overgrown prostate. Used in younger men it increases sex drive and remedies atrophied testicles.
As we age, our joints are prone to painful inflammation. One study revealed that saw palmetto contains compounds that directly inhibit inflammation. When used regularly, muscles plump up and helps moving parts to move better. It blocks the effects of androgen, a solution for women experiencing excessive hair growth.
The real bonus found by research is that saw palmetto berries are rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs). These oils are critical for skin, hair, nail, organ health and builds new cells. Replacing old, worn-out cells efficiently is the key to youthfulness.
Glyconutrients, produced by Mannatech Inc and Sam Caster the founder, are scientifically validated supplements and their products for adults and children, address health and wellness issues, weight management and skin care. Glyconutrients are plant-based "health sugars" giving optimal health and well being.

Facial Affects

Doesn't every woman want a facial?
This is how the experts pamper and create a private retreat in comfort for yourself at home.
When you are ready to treat yourself find a quiet space and set aside at least 30 minutes for some "me" time. Phone off the hook and tell family you are not to be disturbed.
1. Cleanse your face with a creamy cleansing lotion. Then apply a cleanser in up ward, circular movements over the face eyelids and neck, ensuring all traces of make-up are wiped away. Rinse face with warm water and remove excess moisture with a hand towel.
2. Exfoliate moistened facial skin, avoiding the eye area. Massage into the skin with firm, circular movements, until the skin feels slightly warmed. Wipe off with make-up remover pads and rinse face thoroughly. Pat dry.
3. Tone- Moisten make-up remover pads with a toner and stroke gently over face to remove traces of exfoliator, but also to refresh and re-balance your skin.
4. Steam - Fill a bowl with hot water. Position your face above the bowl and cover your head with a bath towel to create a "steam tent". For a soothing, aromatic experience, you can pop in a herbal tea bag. Breathe deeply and steam your face for about five to ten minutes.
5 Pat face dry and then apply your specially selected mask generously, over the face. Avoid the eye area and if desired, take the mask down over your neck and decolletage. Relax in a chair or even lie down for 10 to 15 mins.
6. Remove mask thoroughly, firstly with make-up remover pads and then with a dampened face washer.
7. Apply toner to make-up pads. Sweep gently over the face. Apply a moisturiser to face and neck. Pat some eye cream onto the eye contour.

Delicate Skin Protection

Excerpt taken from Unique natural health & Beauty news
At last the winter is disappearing as well as the dryness of face and hands, especially with the daily water and chemical usage.
'If you suffer from skin irritations such as eczema and psoriasis then just washing your hands can cause discomfort. And if you are dealing with strong harmful chemicals such as detergents, shampoos and disinfectants as part of your daily activities your skin becomes even more sensitive'. I keep telling people to use a barrier cream to protect the skin as it is like an invisible glove.
'It should also prevent the skin from reabsorbing perspiration and protecting already damaged skin'. Some creams can cause irritation themselves so make sure it is a natural product. 'A good barrier cream will also help to improve the appearance, smoothness and softness of your skin without being greasy....and non slippery. Used regularly it will help your skin to heal itself, naturally'.

Mannatech Inc. with Sam Caster, have produced glyconutrients which support your body's natural ability to reach optimum nutritional levels to enhance quality of life. Mannatech has also introduced this year their Optimal Skin Care System giving improvement in hydration, skin moisture, wrinkles, skin tone and radiance.

Aloe Vera For Smooth Skin

There has been a great turn around to using natural products in the cosmetic industry. Aloe vera is widely used in our creams and lotions. Pharmaceutical cosmetic markets have moved away from synthetic ingredients and returned to natural botanicals whenever possible.
Both Queen Nefertiti and Cleopatra, who are known for their striking beauty, used and bathed in Aloe vera. We don't know whether or not the legends are factual we do know that "Aloe vera's ingredients can help moisturize the skin, help regenerate dead skin, and tighten facial tissue. The compounds within the gel can also help eliminate acne, blackheads, and liver spots" (Taylor-Donald),' says Dr. Neeci Moore in The Miracle in Aloe Vera.
'Many cosmetic companies attempt to increase the sales of their products by claiming that they contain Aloe vera. Although these claims might be true....... Many of these products that claim to have Aloe in them have other toxic ingredients, making the presence or absence of Aloe irrelevant. Some of these toxins should be avoided.
To address the issue regarding products claiming to contain Aloe, Drs. Danhof and McAnalley conducted some studies to determine the actual content and effectiveness of various products. The results indicated that some products contained stabilised Aloe vera, some contained little or no Aloe vera, and some contained cytotoxic preservatives. They warned that "stabilised Aloe vera that is used on skin or in products intended for use on skin should be tested to show that its beneficial effects have been preserved" (Danhof Y& McAnalley, 1983, 110).'

One of the wonderful skincare gels produced by Mannatech Inc., with Sam Castor CEO of Mannatech Inc., is Emprizone. It's soothing, hydrating gel gives great protection containing Ambrotose which includes amazing Aloe vera and glyconutrients.

Smooth Moves

Necessary precaution from 'The Doctors Book of Home Remedies'
With summer on the way women all tend to shave more often to have smooth, hair-free sleek skin. Unfortunately, many women end up with an ugly red rash. "Slap on soap and quickly shave over and end up with razor burn" says Dr Evelyn Placek, a dermatologist and doctor of internal medicine.
"Razor burn is actually a skin irritation," says Dr Placek. "When you shave, you're basically peeling off part of your epidermis - the top layer of skin. The redness is a normal response to tissue injury.....'
"Razor burn is hard to get rid of," says Dr Patricia Farris Walters. "Every time you shave again, you re-irritate your skin."
You could stop shaving or try these tips:
Lubricate skin after you shave - "A moisturising body lotion will help reduce dryness and itchiness after shaving," says Dr D'Anne Kleinsmith, a dermatologist.
Shave after you bathe - Next time you shave, give irritate skin a break by making sure that it's well-hydrated before you graze a razor over it.
Drop the soap - People with razor-sensitive skin should stick with a shaving cream that contains aloe or some other soothing ingredient, recommends Dr Placek.
Shave it down - Shave hair in the direction that it grows - in a downward motion.
Switch to a hair-dissolver cream - Consider using a lotion depilatory, which dissolves hair.
Go electric - "Sometimes I recommend that women switch to electric razors," says Dr Walters. "It may give you a smoother, more even shave than a regular razor."

Mannatech Inc. understands health begins at the cellular level. The breakthrough optimal health technology extends to the cells of your skin. Their Optimal Skin Care Cream increases hydration for a fresh and healthy glow all day.

Clear Away Winter Worries

"If the dry skin and bad hair days of winter are getting you down, it's time to take action," says Ylla Wright from Australian Table.
Unless you're hitting the ski slopes, chances are you've had enough of winter and all it brings with it: parched, dry lips; skirts clinging with static electricity; hard-to-tame tresses. Sure, those crisp mornings were great when they first appeared early in the season, but now it's all about hibernating in front of the telly with a DVD and a family block of chocolate.
Take positive steps to beat the winter blues by treating yourself to a little seasonal TLC So what if no-one else knows whether you've waxed your legs or not? You will, and that's what really matters.'
Some ideas to feel and look great for the season:
See what is available for that new look in nail colour.
Give your skin a premium face and body mask to detoxify sensitive skin.
Work on heels and elbows. Buff rough heels with a foot paddle or pumice stone and massage in cream.
Give your hair a work over with deep conditioning treatment.
Feel invigorated with an energizing shower gel or relax with and body wash.

Mannatech Inc. knows that the best ingredients make all the difference. Their Optimal Skin Care Systemtm contains only high quality, certified organic ingredients that are rich in antioxidants and free of fragrance, colourants, toxins and mineral oil. Designed to work synergisticallyto prevent the visible signs of aging, the Optimal Skin Care Systemtm is formulated for both women and men, any age and all skin types.

Crystal - Does It Work?

Can a crystal really be used as an underarm deodorant?
Does it work? Definitely yes!
After using this crystal deodorant for a year without any complaints from anyone, I believe it to be the answer to the problem of aluminum in the usual deodorants.
Now readily available in all good health stores and pharmacies, the most natural deodorant you will find. It is ideal for anyone who has sensitivity to regular deodorants or just looking for a natural option.
How does this work? Well...crystal deodorant works naturally, by keeping the bacteria on the skin from multiplying. The crystals on the skin impede the growth of bacteria by raising the pH level of the skin and forming a high alkaline environment. This stops the bacteria dead in their tracks - and the result - no more odour!
Crystal deodorant leaves you feeling fresh and clean throughout the day and it is available in a plastic bag - ideal for use at home, in a protective push-up acrylic tube, and a sports tube - with a soft neoprene cover.

Mannatech Inc. has seven products in the Optimal Skin Care System delivering maximum moisture and nutrients to facial skin cells, leaving you with glowing, more youthful-looking skin. After only one use you will enjoy noticeable improvement in skin hydration.

Health Begins at TheCellular Level

Mannatech Inc. understands that health begins at the cellular level. They extend their breakthrough optimal health technology to the cells of your skin.
Water, a basic component of all existence, soothes, invigorates, replenishes and revitalises. Essential to life, water delivers valuable nutrients throughout our systems. With its natural preservative qualities their remarkable water now serves as the basis for their luxurious products that will keep your skin healthy, supple and radiant. Each product is preservative-free, fragrance-free, colourant-free and non-comedogenic (will not cause or aggravate acne).

Avoid Strong Chemicals on Hair

Surveys show at least 50% of women believe they have sensitive skin!
After being told by an engineer, (who new heaps about chemicals and additives), that I should only use pure soap (like Sunlight) to wash my hair and not colour or perm my hair, I have been vigilant in looking for natural products for my hair. Products which would not harm my skin.

After all they put patches on ones skin to stop smoking!!
Eight out of ten shampoos sold in Australia still contain 'sulfate' cleaners like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which researchers warn can produce a dry, itchy scalp and dandruff as well as corrosion of the hair follicles leading to hair loss. Others contain olefi sulfonates, which may be even more irritant. A popular alternative to SLS, its cousin sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), undergoes a chemical process which makes it a little less irritant but may leave it contaminated with 1.4 dioxane.

Most at risk are those with a recognised skin condition or just dry, red or itchy skin or scalp, infants, chemotherapy patients and the elderly. Sufferers of multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue or allergies may also want to avoid some cosmetic ingredients.
So now I have found Al'chemy from the The Purist Company, where they don't use any of the 'nasties' - no cheap sulfate cleansers, no ethoxylates and no toxic preservatives. Their shampoos and conditioners are just great for all types of hair and conditions.

Mannatech Inc. also has scientists at the cutting-edge of nutritional science. Glyconutrients are necessary for optimal health. Glyconutrients are generally missing from our diet but essential for health and well-being in all humans.

Facts to Keep Skin Clear and Radiant

Taken from 'Go' magazine Issue 3 'Beauty From Within' adaption

For skin that is clear, healthy and full of vitality and radiance:

- Limit caffeine, sugar and salt intake.
- Avoid too much alcohol. This can dilate capillaries, which may cause sagging and wrinkles.
- Reduce processed and fried food intake.
- Limit carbohydrates. Excessive carbohydrate intake can cause high blood glucose levels, which create inflammatory conditions and have damaging effects on your skin.
- Don't eliminate all dietary fat - good fats keep your skin soft and supple.
- Plenty of good quality rest is important. Skin is like a mirror - it reflects what is happening in your body and mind.
- Get exercising - which helps improve peripheral circulation, which in turn ensures the skin receives sufficient oxygen and fluid
- Free radicals flourish when stress is present! If stressed try yoga, massage, aromatherapy or B-group vitamin supplementation.
- Avoid the sun - UV radiation is the greatest cause of premature ageing because it damages collagen and produces free radicals that harm the skin. Wear a hat and sunglasses.
- Exfoliate weekly - this helps to rid the skin of its superficial dead skin layer and give you a healthy glow.
- Ensure that skin products you use are as natural as possible and therefore less likely to 'clog' the skin pores.
- Have a positive attitude and surround yourself with people who recognise your inner beauty and you will shine!

Mannatech's understands that health begins at the cellular level and have developed their Optimal Skin Care System providing optimal health technology to the cells of your skin.

Technology Making a Serious Difference

The Real Story that US ABC’s 20/20 Investigators Missed
ABC’s 20/20 story on Mannatech – Why did ABC not finish their investigation on Mannatech?
By Mark Johnson, June 2, 2007

'.......Dr McDaniel has published research based on accepted testing methods demonstrating that supplementation with glyconutrients greatly increases the production of adult stem cells in the human body........'

'......... When you pick up the Star, or the National Enquirer, you sort of figure that
things they write about are likely untrue. The sad thing is that shows like 20/20 portray an air of sophistication and lead you to believe they’re “investigative journalists.” Now we can see that they are not reporters, they are entertainers. This is classic “yellow journalism.”

I hope this has helped clear the air about the intent of the 20/20 show. Fortunately, the truth is that we do have technology that is making a serious difference, helping to restore people's lives. Understand that we need not worry about such trivial nonsense from the media - it is to be expected.......'

Glowing Complextions

Mostly it is a roller coaster time for teenagers when it comes to having a glowing complexion.
There are many things that teenagers can do to help retain or increase their clear, radiant skin.

The best way to a smooth, clear bacteria-free skin is to drink plenty of water a day. At least 8 glasses; we see recomkmendation coming from most researchers and medical facilities. Water keeps the skin well hydrated, improves texture and appearance as well as flushing out toxins.

Not using too much make up as a teenager will also do wonders as cosmetics such as foundation
can clog the pores causing blemishes and pimples. Touching your face can cause break-outs as you touch all sorts of germs during the day.

Another critical factor is to clease excess oil and dead skin cells before they clog pores as well as eating well. Skin-friendly foods include those rich in omega-3 fats, such as oily fish, avocado and walnuts, as well as omega-9 fats, found in olive oil and almonds. Of course it is necessary to avoid sugary and highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates.

Mannatech understands that health begins at the celluar level. With their nutritional glyconutrients they have now the technology for optimal health technology to the cells of your skin.

Great Hints for Beauty

We have all by now heard about GI, meaning the Glycemic Index, High - Medium or Low.

Did you know that low GI burns more fat?
Low GI carbohydrates can help you burn more fat when you exercise. According to an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the amount of fat burned during exercise after a low GI breakfast was much greater than after a high GI breakfast.

So, what are the low GI breakfast options?
Yoghurt, fresh or canned pears, baked beans on grainy toast, porridge, breakfast cereals based on oats and barley (muesli, oat flakes), and grainy toast.

Here are some ways to make salads healthier:

Swap 100g of fetta for 100g of goat's cheese, a lot less fat and less than half the salt.

Swap 1 green capsicum for 1 red capsicum. Red has more beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A) for a strong immune system and healthy skin.

Swap 100g iceberg lettuce for 100g baby spinach. Spinach contains more vitamins, antioxidants and minerals, such as vitamin C, beta-carotene and fibre.

Mannatech products contain glyconutrients, also the product AO contains exceptional antioxidants. Their Optimal Skin Care System extends benefits to the cells of your skin.

Diamonds Churned Out in a Day

This is one for the girls. Fantastic news about our greatest friend 'Diamonds'.
I saw this awe-inspiring news in the 'Creation' magazine Dec 2006 - Feb 2007.

The technology to produce man-made diamonds continues to improve.

It is now possible for flawless single-crystal diamonds of more than 2 carats (the average engagement ring is less than a carat) to be churned out in a day. This shows you don't need millions of years to get diamonds!

Apart from ramifications for the jewellery industry, researchers are hoping to further develop the technology so as to be able to cheaply mass-produce diamond semi-conductors.

During the past year, they've been able to grow 10-carat single crystals with a colour and clarity surpassing that of mined diamonds.

Glyconutrients have also inspired researchers to cutting-edge technology and Mannatech has produced these necessary sugars for the human diet. It is found there is an increase in production in one's bone marrow stem cell production.

Winter Tends to Dry Us Out

Ways to beat dry itchy skin during winter.

Skin slows down oil production in winter. If your skin gets really dry, it's more likely to react to beauty products, so choose hypo-allergenic skin-care and avoid those containing fragrance. You can use a rich moisturiser as long it doesn't clog your pores. Use a gentle moisturinsing mask once a week if you are using a heavy moisgturiser, firstly apply a cleansing mask that dries on the skin, to clear pores. You may use a creamy cleanser that can be wiped off with tissues or a warm cloth. Even gengtle foaming cleaners can dry the skin.

Simply rubbing sorbolene cream into your skin before having a shower, tends to have great beneficial affects on the skin. Of course we all like to have those very hot showers in the winter to make us feel good. One problem is that hot water always dehydrates you skin, so it is well to avoid the too hot shower.

Using a loofah or mesh glove can really irritate you skin so in winter it is better to perhaps stick to a face washer and be really gentle. Of course my favourite is Dove Moisturising soap, which feels really smooth and stops your skin drying out more.

In winter it is essential to always apply a moisturer while your skin is still damp, to seal in the moisture.

Mannatech has launched their new Optimal Skin Care System extending their breakthrough optimal health technology to the cells of your skin. Each product is preservative-free, fragrance-free, colourant-free, non-comedogenic (will not cause or aggravate acne) and is allery-tested.

Avocados - Full of Antioxidants

This weeks message is clear and simple:

Avocados are one of nature's best super foods packed with essential vitamins and minerals, cholesterol and sodium free. They contain more than fourteen essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C and E, B6, niacin and riboflavin as well as copper, potassium and magnesium.

They are a great source of folate, vital for expectant mums. They are also rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, making them an excellent alternative to foods containing saturated fats, such as spreads and dips. In fact, they're so good for you they carry the National Heart Foundation's Tick of Approval, so there is really no reason not to buy avocado and use it in your favourite recipes.

These suggestions were appreciated:

1) Roughly mash an avocado with finely diced tomato, red onion and chilli, as well as a little lime juice, for a quick and tasty guacamole.
2) Spread avocado on toasted Turkish bread with sliced tomato, torn basil leaves and a little olive oil, or add to cheese on toast for extra taste.
3) Mix avocado with a little lime juice and chopped dill. Spread over bagel halves and top with smoked salmon, rocket leaves and capers.
4) Slice and add to homemade pizzas. Try teaming with seafood, crispy prosciutto, bacon, grilled chicken, corn kernels, capsicum or fetta.
5) Make a quick winter salad by tossing together cubed avocado and pear, crushed macadamia pieces and a little lime juice.

GlycoMatrix produced by Mannatech provides greater absorption of nutrients than other existing supplement technologies.

Menopause Naturally!

This is an inovative concept, taking menopause naturally!

It is known that three million women take oestrogen replacement therapy. It makes us feel good alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness.

However, oestrogen therapy can also cause a whole host of nasty side effects. These include nausea, breast tenderness and abdominal cramps. Also depression, dizziness, bloating, body hair and abnormal vaginal bleeding are part of the side effects. It is now given as true that oestrogen may increase your risk of breast cancer and endometrial cancer after many research studies.

There is a herb which has given better results on all symptoms in one study, including hot flushes, fatigue and mood swings. This herb is black cohosh and is even more amazing that researchers have found that it reversed menopausal changes in the vagina. There was an increased proliferation of vaginal tissue plus improved vaginal muscle tone and a decrease in vaginal dryness.

Mannatech’s scientists, through their cutting-edge research, has developed a product which helps in normalising the hormone level in the human body.

The Magic Herb

Taken from 'Prevention Magazine'

This amazing herb fights Heart Disease, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis and More.
Imagine there was a herbal remedy that was proven to help stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer's Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis.

Imagine that same herb was effective against asthma, altitude sickness, tinnitus and fibromyalgia. And imagine that youcould also use it to help get rid of mouth ulcers, haemorrhoids, varicose veins and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Well, imagine no more. Such an herb exists! What's more, it's ease to find at health food stores and supermarkets. The herb I'm talking about is ginkgo biloba. That's right, ginkgo biloba, the popular memory-boosting herb. Ginkgo does a lot more than improve memory. It's also a powerful antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, a toner of blood vessels and a tonic that improves overall health and well-being.

It's fitting that ginkgo would be such an amazing cure-all. After all, it's the oldest tree species on the planet. There's so much more you should know about this amazing plant and it is readily available in health stores or herbal pharmacies.

Glyconutrients are essential to general health and wellbeing. Mannatech is at the cutting edge of optimal health science.

The Wrinkle Question

What Causes Wrinkles? - Ageing Process
As ageing occurs, a person's skin cells divide more slowly, and the inner skin, or dermis, starts to thin. Fat cells beneath the dermis begin to atrophy, and the underlying network of elastin and collagen fibres, which provides scaffolding for the surface layers, loosens and unravels. Skin loses its elasticity; when pressed, it no longer springs back to its initial position but instead sags and forms furrows, or wrinkle lines. The skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes; the sweat and oil-secreting glands atrophy, depriving the skin of their protective water-lipid emulsions. As a consequence, the skin becomes dry and scaly. In addition, the ability of the skin to repair itself diminishes with ageing, so wounds are slower to heal. Frown lines (those between the eyebrows) and crow's feet (lines that radiate from the corners of the eyes) appear because of persistent small muscle contractions. Habitual facial expressions also form characteristic lines, contributing to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids
Sun Damage (Photo ageing)
The skin can also age prematurely as a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation emanating from the sun (called extrinsic ageing or photo ageing). Sun damage cannot be overestimated as the most important cause of skin ageing and skin disorders, such as cancers. Overall, exposure to ultraviolet (referred to as UVA or UVB) radiation from sunlight accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin ageing, and most of these effects occur by age 20. Both UVA and UVB rays cause damage leading to wrinkles, lower immunity against infection, ageing skin disorders, and cancer. Even small amounts of UV radiation damage collagen fibres (the major structural protein in the skin) and cause accumulation of abnormal elastin (the protein that causes tissue to stretch). During sun damage, large amounts of enzymes called metalloproteinase are produced. The normal function of these enzymes is to remodel the sun-injured tissue by synthesising and reforming collagen. This is an imperfect process, however, and to achieve it, some of these enzymes actually degrade collagen. The result is an uneven formation (matrix) of disorganised collagen fibres called solar scars. If this process of imperfect skin rebuilding occurs over and over, wrinkles result. Effectively protecting the skin from sun damage is one of the most important ways to reduce wrinkles and prevent cancer.

Birth Defects Linked to NSAIDS and SSRIs

NEWS UPDATE: VOLUME 32 - September 2006Birth Defects Linked to NSAIDs and SSRIs Recent reports have linked pregnant women’s use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with birth defects and other adverse effects on newborns. Perhaps most alarming is the fact that NSAIDs – some of which are available over the counter – and SSRIs are still commonly taken by pregnant women. While previous studies showed inconsistent results about risks associated with taking NSAIDs a nd SSRIs during pregnancy, current results indicate cause for concern: Investigators have shown that babies of women who took NSAIDs during the first trimester had a significantly higher risk of heart defects and other congenital anomalies, and babies born to women taking SSRIs during pregnancy run a higher risk of low birth-weight or of developing respiratory distress. The more recent findings for NSAIDs, while requiring confirmation with further studies (according to the investigators) have implications for pregnant women who may self-medicate with non-prescription NSAIDs.NSAIDs are a class of pain-relief drugs that includes over-the counter medications Aleve (naproxen) and Advil (ibuprofen), and prescriptions drugs Celebrex (celecoxib) and Cataflam (diclofenac). SSRIs are a class of antidepressant drugs that includes Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline) and Paxil (paroxetine).

Glyconutrients have many benefits for improved health and wellbeing.

Warning About Cosmetics

A Current Affair – by Ros Thomas 7/9/06

Many women will spend a small fortune on toiletries and cosmetics over their lifetime, using them morning and night. However, very few women actually have a clue what is in the products they use.

A British lobby group has issued a warning that the average woman applies more than 175 chemical compounds to her face and body every day.

Dr Ernest Tan, a Perth dermatologist, says the cosmetic industry sells science to women as though it is nature. Chief amongst their favoured ingredients are the following:

Formaldehyde – the same compound used to embalm bodies
Sodium laurel sulphate – used to create bubbles in shampoos and soaps
Parabens – often used in moisturizers, mostly as preservatives.

All of the above ingredients can cause reactions, from simple irritations if the skin is slightly damaged, to full allergic reactions.

However, beauty editors such as Cleo magazine’s Rachel Mannell say if those chemicals weren’t in makeup, no one would buy them because they’d look, smell and feel terrible.

“It’s a catch-22 because sulphates are used in shampoos and cleansers for the foaming effect and if the products don’t have sulphates in them, they don’t foam and consumers are unhappy,” Mannell says.

But no longer fooled by the glitz and glamour of the beauty business, many women are now asking questions about what’s in their cosmetics and why you need to be a scientist to understand the labels.

Certainly dermatologists say we’re being bombarded with all kinds of products none of us need.

“I think a lot of females are using too many products and I think all they need to use is a soap-free wash, a moisturizer and some sun protection. I think the rest, in terms of cosmetics, are over-used and over-marketed,” Dr Tan says.

Explanation of Skin Structure

Dermis or corium layer
The dermis is a tough and elastic layer containing white fibrous tissue interlaced with yellow elastic fibres.
As you can see in the skin diagram, many structures are embedded in the dermis including:
· Blood vessels;
· Lymphatic capillaries and vessels;
· Sweat glands and their ducts;
· Sebaceous glands;
· Sensory nerve endings;
· The arrectores pilorum (or arrector pilli), involuntary muscles are sometimes activated in cold weather to give 'goose bumps';
· Hair follicles, hair bulbs and hair roots.

Hypodermis or subcutaneous layer
This is the deepest of the layers of skin, and is located on the bottom of the skin diagram. It connects or binds the dermis above it to the underlying organs. This layer is mainly composed of loose fibrous connective tissue and fat (adipose) cells interlaced with blood vessels. In females, the hypodermis is generally about 8% thicker than in males. The main functions of the hypodermis include insulation, storing of lipids, cushioning of the body and temperature regulation.

Skin functions
· Protects the body against physical injury.
· Provides some protection for the body against numerous pathogenic microbes and chemical agents.
· Helps to restrict fluid and water loss.
· Helps to prevent excessive water absorption by imparting water resistance to the skin.
· Is involved in temperature regulation of the body.
· Is the body’s main sensory organ for temperature, pressure, touch and pain.
· Provides protection from UV light.
· Plays a key role in metabolism, including vitamin D synthesis and biotransformation of some chemicals. Lack of vitamin D can lead to soft bones and many associated problems.

Many people do not realize how much the skin does. As can be seen in the diagram of skin, your skin is a complex and important organ. It is also the largest organ in the body.

Nutrition Key to Beautiful Skin

Healthy skin is beautiful skin - Key to this is Nutrition - inside and outside
It is vital to understand the importance of this important marriage of both- beautiful skin starts on the inside - we can use these amazing skin care products but still be rapidly aging on the inside – rust, like a cut apple - you don’t want to be a beautiful corpse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Largest organ of elimination, though it is less cared for - we subject it to many extremes in one day - sun damage, external pollutants, self disinterested and weathering - all adds to the aging process and shortens life span of the cells - wrinkles, sagging, bags - loose puffy skin, blemishes, sun spots, discoloration, dropping eye lids, dark circles …… occur
9 million cells per square inch of skin - the surface or top of skin is called the epidermis which consists of 25-30 layers
Ladies apply at least 14 different types of skin products in 1 day - Using more than 175 chemicals - Shampoos, conditioners, Mousse, hairspray, gel, perfume, cosmetics, toothpaste, soap, hand cream, body lotion, body cream, skin care, detergents, sun protection, etc. Australians in 2004 spent $3.6 billion on skin care and toiletries - hair care accounted for $ 846.1 million, the remainder was spent on cosmetics.
Looking Good
Anti aging
Preservative free skin care range
Increases hydration and moisturisation to an even deeper level of the skin to the epidermis layer which plumps up the fat cells ensuring skin cells retain and capture the moisture which then displays as increased radiance and allows the skin to really glow.
“Looking 10 years younger” is a common comment
Water in skin care is latest technology - even more powerful than the wellness water- this water used in our skin care is equal to being filtrated through 100 wellness water filters - very pure.
Ultra Pure Water - Proprietary technology bacteria static water - bacteria and fungus cannot live in this water. Water combines with the ingredients the filtering process refines this into a special delivery system to penetrate the 25 - 35 layers of the epidermis layer of the skin cell. This water is filtered and refined many times through the same maifan rock the Hunzas Valley inhabitants obtain their source of water from - which is one of their secrets enabling them to live to a very old age - many beyond the age of 100.
Three reasons this filtered water is so special is that (a) it hydrates and detoxifies the body faster than normal water (b) secondly it has a higher concentration of negative ions in the water and then (c) lastly the water had elevated levels of soluble silica found in the nearby mountains. It is so pure bacteria and fungus cannot grow in it.

Optimal Skin Care System

OPTIMAL SKIN CARE SYSTEMBy Eugene FoxMannatech Inc. is very careful about how they bring new products to market. They never develop new products merely to produce sales. They think that's irresponsible. A Mannatech product must offer genuine consumer benefits and fill a strategic wellness need. If it's anything less, products never make it to market.Over the last two years Mannatech developed the Optimal Skin Care System, a major line of skin care products, suitable for all skin types. The products are water-based and preservative-free. An amazing new technology allows the products to be made with gentle 'clustered water'[1] that inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, functioning as a preservative. Competitors' products use harsh chemical preservatives. The Optimal system was launched in Japan mid-May, 2006 and received outstanding acceptance. With just network marketing and no advertising sales in the first six weeks were $1.2 million! This becomes even more significant when you understand that Japan is the most competitive skin care market in the world. It was already saturated with skin care products when our line was introduced. Someone commented, "If your skin care products can make it in Japan they can make it anywhere!"
What is our secret? Consumer testing showed the products actually made people look visibly younger. Other results were equally outstanding:--After just one use consumers had 80% increase in skin moisture!--After eight weeks: * 100% increase in skin moisture* 96% decrease in roughness* 73% increase in radiance* 31% increase in skin tone* 32% decrease in lines and wrinkles* 21% increase in firmness. The Optimal Skin Care System is expected to create a whole new generation of Mannatech users. Initially they may only be interested in skin care, but after getting those kinds of results they will no doubt be ready to look at Mannatech's wellness products.

March 6, 2002 Coppell, TX
COPPELL, TX (March 6, 2002)– NASDAQ (MTEX) - Mannatech, Inc. Medical Director Stephen Boyd, M.D., Ph.D., FRSMS, was an invited speaker at a certified continuing medical education course for healthcare professionals. The conference was sponsored by The Institute of Integrated Medicine (IIM) located in London, Ontario, Canada.
More than 200 doctors and healthcare professionals attended the 6-day medical cruise in the Caribbean, which offered more than 36 hours of continuing medical education (CME) training. Dr. Boyd spoke on the topic “Glycobiology, The New Frontier”. Other courses covered a broad spectrum of complementary and alternative therapy topics including women’s health, detoxification, drug/herb interactions, and drug depletion of nutrients.
“The interchange between complementary and mainstream medicine is steadily increasing,” Dr. Boyd commented. "Carbohydrate technology represents one of the next frontiers in medicine both in terms of drug development and in terms of the glyconutrients that Mannatech researches and develops. Integrative medicine is the future and I believe that glyconutrients will find growing acceptance in complementary care programs. It is important for doctors to explore complementary care options that can make the quality of life better for their patients. ”
Dr. Boyd completed his BS and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry at the University of Glasgow, Scotland and in 1974, graduated with a M.D. degree from the University of Toronto, followed by training in Family Practice. He spent fifteen years in medical practice as a family physician, both in Canada and the US.

Dementia may be avoidable

DEMENTIA may be avoidable and even reversible, so it's time Australians embraced a positive attitude to combating the condition, brain experts urged yesterday.
In a hard-hitting report, three of the country's leading research institutes said there was growing evidence ageing and impaired brains can renew cells and reconfigure itself.
Doctors traditionally thought that dementia was genetic and therefore unpreventable - the findings give hope to millions with the condition, which causes severe memory loss and speech impairment.
Dr David Burke of St Vincent's Hospital said: "It has always been thought that dementia is an inexorable decline of mental impairment.
"In fact, the brain has a remarkable capacity to generate new brain cells. Basic lifestyle changes can reduce their risk of developing dementia and reduce the rate of deterioration."
More than a fifth of Australians aged over 85 suffer from dementia and 5 per cent of the over-65's develop it.
It is currently treated with medication, but this only slows the loss of memory, rather than curing or improving the sufferer's condition.
The study – a collaboration between St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney University's Brain and Mind Institute and the Black Dog Institute, which researches mood disorders – was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
It found that mental, as well as physical exercise, helped the brain grow new cells.
Dr Burke, whose 81-year-old father is studying a university medical course, said: "A lot of older people have the view that university and learning are for young people and that they are past all that but adult education helps the brain develop new connections and grow new cells."
He said social interaction was particularly important for stimulating brain growth in old age.
The study also found foods rich in fish oils, vitamin B12 and antioxidants aided the brain's cell-growth capacity.
High blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and obesity all impaired the brain's ability to grow.
The findings have implications for those who have suffered brain damage as they suggest the brain has the ability to compensate for damage.Glyconutrients can improve dementia symptoms.
